How Handicap Betting Works
When a big favourite plays a clear underdog, the straight win market is often dull — the favourite is priced too short to be worth backing, and the underdog too long to fancy. Handicap betting fixes that by giving one team a virtual head start or deficit, levelling the contest and improving the odds on both sides. This guide explains why handicaps exist, the difference between European and Asian handicaps, how a line settles your bet with a worked example, and which sports suit handicaps best.

Bet Handicaps at Hollywood BetsKey Takeaways
- A handicap gives one team a virtual head start (+) or deficit (−) before kick-off.
- European handicaps use whole numbers and keep the draw as a third result.
- Asian handicaps use half lines to remove the draw, and quarter lines to split stakes.
- A whole-number handicap can result in a push (stake refunded); a half line cannot.
- Soccer, rugby and cricket are the natural homes of handicap betting.
Why handicaps exist
Imagine Mamelodi Sundowns hosting a struggling side. The win market might price Sundowns at 1.25 — a return of just R25 profit on R100, hardly worth the risk. Handicap betting solves this by adjusting the final score for settlement purposes. Give Sundowns a −1 handicap and they must win by two or more for your bet to win, which pushes their price up to something like 1.90. Give the underdog +1 and they only have to avoid losing by two or more, again at a more tempting price. The handicap turns a foregone conclusion into a real betting market. If you are new to reading prices, our how betting odds work guide explains the decimal odds used throughout this page.
European vs Asian handicaps
There are two main families of handicap, and the difference matters for how your bet can settle.
- European handicaps use whole numbers (−1, −2, +1, +2) and keep the draw as a separate, third outcome. After applying the handicap you bet on home win, draw or away win of the adjusted match. Because the draw is in play, you can lose even when your team performs roughly as expected.
- Asian handicaps are designed to remove the draw. Half lines such as −0.5, +1.5 or −2.5 make a tie impossible because no score can land exactly on a half. This collapses the market to two outcomes, so the odds on each side sit closer to even money.
Asian handicaps also include quarter lines (−0.25, −0.75, and so on), where your stake is split across the two nearest half/whole lines. A −0.75 bet, for example, is half on −0.5 and half on −1.0. That allows a "half win" or "half loss" — winning by exactly one goal on a −0.75 bet wins the −0.5 portion and refunds the −1.0 portion. This cushioning is what makes Asian handicaps popular with cautious bettors.
A worked −1 / +1 example
Say you back the favourite at −1 with R100 at odds of 1.90, while a friend backs the underdog at +1 at 2.00. After the match, subtract 1 from the favourite (or add 1 to the underdog) and read off the adjusted result. The table shows every scenario.
| Actual result | Favourite at −1 | Underdog at +1 | R100 outcome (fav −1 @ 1.90) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Favourite wins 3–0 | Wins (adjusted 2–0) | Loses | Win — returns R190 |
| Favourite wins 2–0 | Wins (adjusted 1–0) | Loses | Win — returns R190 |
| Favourite wins 1–0 | Push (adjusted 0–0) | Push | Stake refunded — R100 |
| Match drawn 1–1 | Loses (adjusted 0–1) | Wins | Loss — R0 |
| Underdog wins 2–1 | Loses (adjusted 1–2) | Wins | Loss — R0 |
The key row is the 1–0 win: with a whole-number handicap, a result that lands exactly on the line produces a push, and your R100 stake is returned in full — you neither win nor lose. Had you taken an Asian −1.5 instead, there is no push: the favourite would have needed to win by two or more, and a 1–0 win would simply lose. That single difference — push versus no push — is the main reason to choose a whole line or a half line.
Handicaps and draw-no-bet
Draw-no-bet (DNB) is the gentlest handicap of all: it is effectively a handicap of 0. You back a team to win outright, but if the match ends level your stake is refunded instead of lost. It is identical to an Asian handicap of 0.0. DNB is ideal when you are confident a team will not lose but worried about a draw — you sacrifice some odds compared with the straight win market in exchange for that safety net. Think of the handicap scale as a dial: 0 (DNB) protects against a draw, −0.5 needs a clean win, −1 needs a win by two with a push at one goal, and so on up the line.
Which sports suit handicap betting
Handicaps shine in sports where mismatches are common and favourites are priced too short to back outright.
- Soccer: the classic handicap market. Low-scoring games make the line crucial — a −1 versus −1.5 choice often decides your bet. Explore fixtures on our soccer betting page.
- Rugby: points handicaps are huge here because scorelines are high and gaps between teams are wide. A line of −12.5 on the Springboks against a weaker side is far more interesting than a 1.10 win price. See rugby betting.
- Cricket: handicaps appear as runs (in limited-overs cricket) or in dedicated markets, letting you back a strong side to win by a margin. Our cricket betting page covers the formats.
Tips for betting handicaps
- Match the line to your read. If you expect a narrow win, a +half line on the favourite or DNB may be safer than chasing a big −line.
- Mind the push. Whole-number handicaps can refund; half lines never do. Choose deliberately.
- Compare lines across bookmakers. One site's −1 may be another's −1.5 at similar odds — shop around on our best betting sites page.
- Stake responsibly. Handicaps feel safer but still carry the bookmaker's margin — apply sound bankroll management.
Where to go next
Handicaps pair naturally with totals — many punters combine a handicap with an over/under bet on the same match. You can also fold handicap selections into an accumulator for bigger returns.
